Sachie Ueshima, soprano
Sachie Ueshima, a native of Japan, has been praised for her expressive artistry and commanding stage presence across both operatic and concert repertoire. Her most recent performances include the title role of Cio-Cio-San in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly with Virginia Opera and Kentucky Opera in 2024. In the 2024–25 season, she will make her role debut as Zerlina in Don Giovanni with Madison Opera. She was also a Studio Artist with Madison Opera in the 2023–24 season.

Other recent credits include Violetta in Verdi’s La traviata with University Opera at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and Krystyna Zywulska in Jake Heggie’s Two Remain (Out of Darkness)—a production that earned First Place in the 2021–2022 National Opera Association Opera Production Competition. Additional roles include Pamina and Papagena in Die Zauberflöte, Musetta in La Bohème, Sœur Constance in Dialogues des Carmélites, Drusilla in L’incoronazione di Poppea, and Lady with a Hand Mirror in Postcard from Morocco.

On the concert stage, Ueshima has appeared as a soloist in Mozart’s Great Mass in C minor, Bach’s B Minor Mass, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, and Händel’s Messiah, to name a few. She was the winner of the 2021 UW–Madison Concerto Competition, performing Berg’s Sieben frühe Lieder with the UW–Madison Symphony Orchestra. Additional accolades include Second Place in the 2022 American Prize in Art Song & Oratorio (Professional Division). She was very honored to appear as soloist at the opening mass of the Festival Internazionale di Musica Sacra at St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican in 2015.

Ueshima holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in voice from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where she also earned a doctoral minor in choral conducting.
